I’m from Poland. I’m 48 years old. It was the last time for decision. I had date reservation in Poland (one year wait) . While when I was waiting for surgery I got contact with prof. Klaus Schaarschmidt. He had answered immediately and invited me for professional operation on my chest. I've never seen in Poland as hospital as Berlin Buch. There is very well. I saw that staves working calmly and everyone knew what they should do. Prof. Schaarschmidt has amazing hands for difficult work. He is like quick man. I felt safely with him. I had pectus excavatum 3 cm symmetric. Before surgery prof. suggested one bar inside my chest, but while surgery he decided used 2 bars because my bones were hard. After surgery I was exercising with prof. Schaarchmidt and physiotherapist and his assistant and of course with my sweetie wife. It was difficult time for me but I survived. I felt pain that I can't slept all night without painkiller. While sitting or standing was OK but when I laying it was bad I felt tough pain. I was constantly sleepy and I couldn't working. After three month I've put off painkillers and I came back to work. After six month I was beginning workout: jogging, gym and soccer. My chest looks better and better. I'm more confident person than before. My dream realized and I won new dreams. Now is nine month after surgery. I can definitely put my opinion it was the gorgeous decision to do surgery by prof. Klaus Schaarschmidt.

For several years already I wanted to proceed to that surgery even though my family didnt want me to proceed due to my minor pectus case. I listened to them for few years but always felt uncomfortable having this hole in my chest so I decided to proceed and meet Dr Schaarschmidt in Berlin in May 2016 where I literally changed my mind and got scared so I didnt do the surgery. Its only in October 2017 that I finally did get my surgery done. I got to admit the pre-surgery is scary probably like all kind of surgery.
The post-surgery is harder than I though but once you get over the intensive care its a whole new life that you can start. Now its been over 2 weeks that the procedure was done and I am home, I can swim, move around without problem and work (If you have a stressful job like mine I recommend not to over do, my girlfriend literally keep shouting at me for that and I felt exhausted when I worked over 6 hours a day which is nothing).
I live in the US so the plane was a total of 11hours and its a pain but its only once.
Other than that Prof Schaarschmidt is probably the best surgeon in the world and he will be able to explain to you everything in details. He took the time to come few times after surgery to see how I was doing and to share some tips with me.
If you want to do that surgery than do not hesitate and move forward with it. Just dont go to your local surgeon just because its more convenient for you, use a real professional that knows what he is doing.

As a 45 year old patient with severe PE I looked for the most experienced surgeon to help me. The two bars were implanted in Sept 2016 and removed in April 2019. The goal was no cosmetic. It was to improve my quality of life. It did. Massively. It solved my orthostatic intolerance. Even though it was a bumpy process due to pain, which was expected, I always felt I was in good hands. Prof Schaarschmidt's team is very dedicated and kind. Surgery is always stressful especially in an unknown environment like a foreign country, but I found it manageable. I do not regret my choice, quite the opposite. Prof Schaarschmidt was the right person for me. Over the years I had lost confidence in the medical profession, but when I first talked to Prof Schaarschmidt I felt I could trust him.
If you are an unusual case (due to age or severity) I would recommend asking Prof Schaarschmidt's opinion. Even if you consider another surgeon his opinion could be very useful. Don't forget you have only one shot with this kind of surgery as redos are so difficult or even impossible. So make sure you make the right choice.

I had my nuss redo performed in the beginning of this year by Prof Schaar. I am an international patient that needed to correct a previously failed nuss that left me with a hybrid asymmetric pectus carinatum and excavatum deformity.

Prof Schaar removed the bars that my first surgeon had put in and placed two new bars. He completely fixed my pectus excavatum. The surgery not only improved my chest, but also my posture, I could finally stand up straight. However, I currently do still have an obvious asymmetric carinatum deformity. My pec muscles also appear to have been spread further apart after the surgery creating a huge muscle division on my sternum.

My stay in Berlin was short and without any complications. I was there for approximately 10 days before I was discharged. The nurses in the ward were pleasant and the ones in the ICU were absolutely world class! I have no complaints with any of them.

I am under a year post op and still have some general discomfort which has been managed through breathing exercise and physiotherapy.
I want to conclude that it is important to choose a surgeon with experience, and only a few in the world have a level of expertise to give consistently good results. I am glad I choose Schaar for my redo.

If anyone has any questions, I would be happy to answer them. You can shoot me a message on this platform. Goodluck on your journey!!
