What is the longest anyone has had a Nuss bar in? Has anyone been told their bar will stay in permanently?

Never heard anyone being told that by a surgeon/doctor and, AFAIK, you are the winner for having the bar in the longest :)

If you don't mind me asking, why have the bars been in so long?

My surgeon recommended leaving the bar in permanently because of the high likelihood that PE would return if he removed it. My ribs were already deformed prior to the surgery because of scoliosis in my upper back, so the way he explained it, if the bar came out, the "pulling" caused by the curve in my spine would cause my sternum to cave in again. This was at my 3-year post-op check up and at that time, he stated that I no longer needed follow ups unless I was having severe discomfort. I've called his office several times since then to ask if it is really safe to leave the bar in this long, if I should have a check-up to see if the bar is still in place, etc.... each time I've been told that there is no risk to leaving it in and I do not need to follow up anymore. I genuinely didn't know that it was so uncommon to leave the bar in past 3 or so years, or I would have been asking a lot more questions. :) As it stands now, I'm definitely looking into seeing a different specialist to get a new opinion.

Not to my knowledge - at least, I've never been diagnosed with one.

I was wondering if Randy is still on these forums and if so, did you ever get your bars out? I'm hoping to see someone this year for a second opinion on my situation. Just passed the ten year mark with my bar and haven't had a checkup since 3 years post-op. It's causing me a lot of anxiety. I don't even have a doctor right now and not sure who to see.

Hi !
I got my bar removed at this Wednesday (08.03.2017.). The bar was in for 15 years. Surgery lasted two and half hours. I was released from hospital at Thursday afternoon (09.03.).
First day i felt nausea from painkillers. Second day was much better because they gave me ibuprophen oral.
Pain is nothing like in first surgery. i even didnt take painkiller second day in the evening. I just feel numbed.
I didn't hear that enyone had bar for so long so i was nervous about surgery.
