Hi everybody!
I'm new to this forum and need som help to evaluate the condition of my chest. I'm 30 years old and I first started to notice a bulge of my chest/ribs when I was around 13. I have met two doctors about this (no specialist) and they both say that they don't know what this is, but they won't send me to a specialist since I appear healthy otherwise (their words, not my mine..)

This protrusion affects my life in a negative way and I'm pretty self conscious about it. It always seems like I have a upper pot belly due to my ribs pushing forward. I also have a drooping shoulder (right one) and often intense pain between my shoulder blades.

Good posture is really hard to maintain even though I go the gym two to three times a week to try to work on it and have been doing so for the last couple of years.

I have troubles sleeping on my side and on my stomach because it hurts my ribs/sternum and sometimes I even wake up because of the pain. Also, when i take deep breaths it hurts on my right side from my where the ribs attaches to the sternum.

Is this pectus carinatum or something else?

The scar in the middle of my chest is from a removal of a birth mark.

Thanks!

Laui As an Orthotist/Prosthetist who happens to see children with Pectus Carinatum for bracing, its appears that you have more of a barrel chest presentation then PC presentation, its hard to really say with out additional pictures. I would suggest seeing your physician, if you haven't already. Again, I can't diagnosis and its hard to say if you have PC with just the pictures you have, but your chest almost appears to be more barrel chest shape, which can be caused by several different conditions, mainly breathing conditions. I would not want to say at this point you do or do not have PC, but would suggest a follow up visit with your physician and possible a referral to a Thoracic physician (chest physician). If you are having the symptoms you say you are having, would have this checked out. Know this does not answer your question(s).

Thank you for your reply!

If it is barrel chest, Is it possible to correct with bracing?

Laui, I would have to defer that quetion to Joe with Pectus Services, who happens to be on this site sometimes. You can reach him at, www.pectussevices.com , he is very knowledge about this and has been bracing for more then 30 years. If we can brace, since your age and the cartilage at this point is not flexible, bracing goal would be to attempt to improve the presentation, will not correct it. But, I will have to defer your question to Joe. Would recommend to contact him. Thank you and good luck!
